Things to do

Whangarei is the Gate to the North. Only 2 hours from Auckland the city is set on New Zealand's east coast surrounded by beautiful beaches, stunning hills and with something to do for everybody. With a population of approx. 41.000 it is the northern-most city on the North Island and a perfect base to start your adventure.

Activities

Stroll through the Town Basin and enjoy the numerous shops, galleries and cafes. Go for a walk - there's plenty to chose from. Follow the Hatea River to the Whangarei Falls which are meant to be the most photographed ones in Aotearoa. Climb up Mount Parahaki for some amazing views over the Whangarei Harbour or go for a swim at the Aquatic Centre. Or fancy some nightlife? There's various bars and clubs to chose from depending on your preferences.

Beaches

No matter which way you go - it takes about 30mins and you're at the beach. You just have to find your favorite one. Explore the beautiful Tutukaka Coast where one beach is right next to the other. Have a sunbath and go for a swim at popular Matapouri or try surfing at Sandy's. Ngunguru is also a favorite spot for the locals. Further south are find Ruakaka, Waipu (Cove) and Lang's. You could pick a different beach every day and it would take you months to see them all.

Sports and Entertainment

Once again - make your pick. Soccer (football), rugby, netball, athletics... the list of clubs is long. For those who like exercising on their own there's plenty of gyms to chose from, too. Or how about joining a choir or a band while you're here or do some dancing?
